Texas Man to Serve 18 Months for Mail Fraud

Texas Man to Serve 18 Months for Mail Fraud

Rodolfo Reyes “Rudy” Mata, of San Antonio, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for his role in a mail fraud scheme that defrauded the University Medical Center out of nearly $700,000 between 2007 and 2011.  United States District Judge Sam R. Cummings also ordered Mata to pay $54,750 in restitution as part of the sentence.

Mata, and former UMC Vice President Robert “Greg” Bruce, are guilty of stealing over $681,000 from the hospital by submitting fraudulent invoices for payment.  Mata pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud for the single invoice he submitted.  Court records show that Mata admitted to investigators that he submitted 15 bogus bills to the hospital that totaled $54,750.  The University Medical Center first discovered the fraud during an internal audit.

Judge Cummings included a “joint and several” responsibility clause in the restitution order given to Rodolfo Mata.  This ensures that he and Bruce are both responsible for making sure the money is paid back to the hospital.

Robert Bruce was sentenced last month to 51 months in prison and ordered to pay $737,492 in restitution.  He also admitted to using a hospital issued credit card to pay for thousands of dollars of personal bills and purchases during the scheme.

These cases were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by United States Attorney Amanda R. Burch.
